It's About Time

My mother was a computer analyst, but she always found time for me. She always made sure that her career did not interfere with her being a loving and supportive mother to her young daughter participating in sports. When I was competing in various sports, I’d look at the other girls and realize they were not my competition. I was competing against myself to reach a standard. That’s what my mother taught me most of all. And now it has me thinking: we have to start taking care of ourselves. I’m thrilled to have my mom at my side, still cheering me on and helping me to lead the way.

I started going to the Lawrence Boys & Girls Club when I was about nine years old. Our basketball coach was Steve Kelly. He was a kid back then, probably in his early twenties, and he’s someone I looked up to from the beginning. He was just a real positive influence and a great coach and leader. He really encouraged me to work hard, to study and to make something of myself.
Getting caught with drinking (in high school) was a turning point for me. Steve Kelly took me aside and he let me know he was disappointed, and he thought I was better than that. He let me know that drinking like that wasn’t what I should be doing and at that point, the respect I had for him was so great, it had a tremendous impact. There was something about him. You just don’t want to disappoint Steve Kelly.

The night Cal Ripken Jr. broke Lou Gehrig’s record and played in 2,632 baseball games, Cal Ripkin Sr. was right there alongside him.
That was a great, great night, but what a lot of people don’t realize about the streak … it was about your job as a baseball player and who you were as a player. My dad was a realist, someone who rolled up his sleeves and showed up to work. It was the only way I knew how to play, because it was the only way I was taught. It’s what was expected of me, and I honestly feel it’s the approach every athlete should take. I was able to perform at a high level and at the same time establish myself as a regular player. It all flowed from my father, Cal Ripkin Sr.
